With Dr Carey Fleiner
Campus Galli is an experimental archaeology site near Messkirch, Germany. The mission is to build the monastery of St Gall based on a 9th-century manuscript of an idealised monastery designed for Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne. The monastery was never built in the Middle Ages, but the Campus Galli site was begun about 10 years ago, with an estimated completion date of 2040. All construction is being done with 9th-century tools and technology. The site is open to visitors and staffed by full time craftspeople and volunteers. This presentation will describe the site and its mission along with the type of activities she helps out with as a textiles person.
Dr. Fleiner is a Senior Lecturer in Roman history at the University of Winchester with a sideline in historical textiles. She has given talks and workshops, and regularly demonstrates spinning, weaving, and other textile practices at museums and heritage sites in the UK and Germany. She has interpreted periods from the Roman era through Victorian housewife.
